Meanwhile, Congress leader Ajit Jogi has demanded an all-party committee to investigate the incident. Also, ex-MLA and Adivasi Mahasabha president Manish Kunjam has asked for a judicial enquiry. He alleges that while villagers reached on the spot to claim the bodies, the police failed to turn up. However, Home Minister Nankiram Kanwar is busy singing odes to the police, praising the courageous encounter. He insisted that usually, naxalites take away the bodies of their comrades, which is why the police could not trace them. But, in that case, how can they give the exact number 15 naxalites killed? The police countered by saying that they could not take the bodies away as it was dark when the encounter got over and it's difficult to look out for roads at night. But if it was such a successful operation, why didn’t 100 policemen camp inside the forest that night? Some villagers also alleged that some homes were ransacked. and three of the dead women were raped before being shot. The present era is very different. It is interesting even though most of the people who are making films come from the film families. You know, in some respect, India is not a democracy yet. People pick on the politicians and say that a lineage system prevails there, but this system of bhai-bhatija also exists in our industry. I sometimes feel sad that the real good ones are not able to get a chance because of this. And who knows how many closet filmmakers are there, because, you see, there are so many bright people in this country that you never know how many of them might be burning with talent. Even across the various small towns in India, there might be many who have the talent but seeing the scenario in Mumbai, I don’t think they want to come here and that’s why, maybe, changes are not occurring now. Nowadays we don’t see anyone making a film as bold as “Guide”.

There’s another pertinent problem of the present generation, which is that the young people don’t respect the older generation. They insult them and are full of venom for the others. There are a lot of things and changes that the older generation don’t get credit for. The young generation claims that they invented sync sound. How could one forget that all Shyam Benegal’s films were sync sound; the films back in the 60s were sync sound. They take credit for things they don’t deserve!

If we notice, at present, technology has changed but the technique hasn’t improved. There is a difference between the two. The technique is not that superior even today. But again, there are some filmmakers, and especially the non-mainstream filmmakers, who do try to bring change. They make different cinema and involve different actors which has a different effect altogether. Even mainstream actors like Aamir, Saif and Ajay are those kinds of actors who think of creating that effect and are as good as any other actor in the world. We need such actors and filmmakers to effect that change through films over time.....Continue

Russia's new security baby

Would Russia’s initiative to create yet another anti-terror combating organisation help in creating a better world or would it be just another forum for frivolous and aimless talks? Amidst the current global financial crisis, Russia has been successful in persisting in its uniform economic growth and now, after realising its potential, Russia is planning to propose many such projects in future to show its fatherly attitude to the rest of the world. President Dmitry Medvedev along with Dmitry Rogozin, his ambassador to NATO, has outlined plans to conduct a global international conference in Moscow next year. Almost all NATO and European Union (EU) members, some of Russia’s ex-Soviet allies, China and perhaps India are expected to meet to establish a new security organisation to handle issues like terrorism and illegal immigrations.

There is no doubt that this is an applaudable effort by Russia, but still it remains uncertain how will this plan of anti-terror mechanism benefit the rest of the world. This certainly reminds us of a similar organisation called Shangai Co-operation Organisations (SCO), created by Russia itself a few years back. ESPN has now bought over the 14- year-old cricket website cricinfo.com (part of the Wisden Group) – that is the bible of cricket in the online world. The amount of money that has been traded has not yet been made public. Globally, the website which has an audience of more than 7 million each month, also supplies content to mobile phones and news portals. What has worked like magic for the site is the combination of live ball-by-ball coverage of all Tests and One-Day-International matches, news and features written by some of the world’s best cricket writers, and in-depth statistics on the 3,000 international and 45,000 first class cricketers to have played the game. The merger of those two resources has made Cricinfo the world’s leading cricket website. According to Cricinfo’s press release, the site now joins a stable of top-drawer sports websites including ESPN.com, the USs premier online sports destination, and ESPNsoccernet.com – the world’s leading English-language football website. “Growing our business in the online world is vital for us to serve sports fans,” said Russell Wolff, Managing Director of ESPNInternational. “Cricinfo is a tremendous property with a great fan base and it will be a strong addition to ESPN.” Mark Getty, director of the Wisden Group, had this to say: “Cricinfo has developed into a significant cricket brand in its own right, combining huge global popularity with strong commercial success. However, in this whole bunch of distressed customers, is a lot which seems to be rejoicing. Well, those are the firms that relied much on dollar borrowings, as interest expenditure on such dollar borrowings in rupee terms has reduced; hence the servicing of overseas debt has become cheaper to a large extent.

Companies like HDFC, Bharti-Airtel, Lafarge, Jindal Steel & Power & Jaiprakash Associates have significant overseas borrowings. Even in pharma – where companies like Ranbaxy, Sun Pharma, Lupin & Jubilant Organosys have collectively raised almost $1.1 billion by way of ECB/ FCCBs – the gains are huge.

Youth is the latest mantra & Zee is next

After a spate of announcements of launches in the general entertainment genre of Indian television by many players, Zee Group has also announced their plans to launch their second general entertainment channel. Zee Entertainment Enterprise Ltd. will launch a youth channel called ZeeNext, which will focus on a younger audience ‘without alienating the higher age group’. However, the company has abstained from revealing the actual date of the launch and the investment that will go into the venture. Recently, the Indian television industry has seen a lot of efforts by existing and new players in weaning the youth of the country towards the general entertainment channel segment by either pepping up their offerings or by announcing new channels.

Honda gets the power of 100

An India specific 100cc motorcycle is being developed by Honda Motorcycle Scooters India (HMSI). The bike which would be priced slightly higher than the existing bikes in the segment would hit the roads in the next three years. HMSI is not mulling a second plant for the purpose as the new bikes would be produced from its existing Manesar facility. Earlier HMSI had announced Rs.4 billion investment for marketing, product development and capacity expansion (from its current 900,000 to 1,200,000 units per year). The company is also planning to launch a bike in the 125cc segment.

Labour unions ready to Jet set!

They have been facing the wrath of luck for the last six years. Now however the US airline labour unions are all set to retrieve their lost wages & the power they previously enjoyed. The labour unions are hopeful as some of the airliners are on the way to recovery & some even mulling manpower expansion. All major airliners had adopted the retrenchment route after they nearly went bankrupt due to rising fuel prices & competition. Delta for example had cut 6,000 jobs & United reduced wages & brought down its workforce by 25%. Northwest saved around $1.4 billion by cutting labour costs. Contracts with various labour unions were declared void as well. Analysts are of the view that after this long struggle, the labour unions have emerged as better negotiators. With airlines coming under fire because of complaints relating to being understaffed, the unions are sure to be at a better bargaining position.

eWaste disposal needs to be tackled

“We are the largest collectors of WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment) in India (550 million-tonnes-peryear). Still we are only collecting a 5% to 7% of total eWaste generation,” says Subash Warrier, Manager, Environment, Health & Safety of Chennai-based Trishyiraya Recycling India Private Limited, adding, “We have been off erring eWaste collection since 1999 even from houses, but till today we have not been able to collect even a single pack!” Many local scrap dealers use the waste to extract precious metals like aluminium, platinum & gold that are present in various electronic goods. HCL Infosystems and Intel are instances of companies that have taken the issue seriously. Points Rahul Bedi, Director, Corporate Affairs, Intel South Asia, “We follow the strictest policies for eWaste management... we do what’s best for the Earth.”

However, despite such efforts, the eWaste problem is a growing menace and needs to be handled in a more proactive manner. Right from ethical recycling policies to ensuring eWaste deployment, Indian IT giants need to take on this task as a responsibility and not a liability. We just hope more companies act beyond the pen and paper stage.

Environmental policy is often drawn in isolation, owing to the derisory participation of the victims. This is getting worse today, as millions of poor and victimized people are actually the major sufferers of environmental risks. The business of plastic callously passes the waste and residue after production, to the poorest in the land. Moreover, thousands of little hands are involved in collecting this hazardous waste and dumping it to proper allocated places. When we descend the economic ladder, the situation gets worse, as increase in the number of landfills and waste dumps cause a more than significant increase in diseases. For example, these activities give rise to intestinal parasite infection (92% incidence in Kolkata alone), abnormal pulmonary infection (among 23% dump-site workers) and also blood-borne infections. Even the not so distant decision of courts to relocate factories outside the realms of cities ultimately ended up degrading the countryside and arable land of rural folk, generally belonging to the lower economic cadre. Are environmental policies expected to border on nepotism by favouring the betterment of urban and upper income societies at the cost of the health of rural and lower income societies? Guess who in your house can afford bottled water. You, or your maid?

While India Inc. is busy going global, picking up industries in the developed world, the public sector has been quite a laggard in comparison. And India’s indigenous space programme has not been too far behind, as it has come under severe criticism. In this scenario, the recent success story emerging from Sriharikota (Satish Dhawan Space Centre, Tamil Nadu) could have profound implications. On April 23, 2006, Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) achieved a significant milestone by professionally launching its first ever commercial venture – Agile. The astronomical Italian satellite was immaculately placed in an orbit (roughly 550 kms above the surface of Earth) by an indigenously built Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle PSLV-C8 (since 1994, the vehicle has transported 8 remote sensing satellites; a meteorological satellite; a tiny radio satellite & a space capsule, it is also now in the process to launch India’s first mission to the moon, Chandrayaan-1, in 2008).

From launching the slimmest handset – the C100 phone – in 2003 to introducing the SGH T500 mobile that was produced primarily for women who were style savvy, Samsung has concentrated on product enhancements while innovating with each offering. Like myriad brands boasting of a brand ambassador, Samsung first tried its hands at cricketer Virendra Sehwag for promoting its N380 handsets; and later hooked on John Abraham.

“Samsung has always stood for style. But we realised that for the last two years, every player has been launching stylish pieces; we thought while style gives an edge,

we should have substance too,” says Samir Miglani, Business Head (Mobile), Cheil Communications (Samsung’s in-house advertising agency). With the number of mobile phones stolen touching the roof, Samsung thoughtfully launched the mobile tracker feature. “If a phone gets stolen, it’s not just a matter of a few thousands but loss of important information on the cell, like personal messages, contacts, et al,” offers Samir.

The transportation and logistics sector in the country, despite being a high priority sector, suffers from infrastructural issues. What is your take on the future?

In the last few years, we have achieved a lot in terms of infrastructure, especially in roads and ports. The government is pretty pro-active in the way they are willing to unshackle. Yes, they are not doing it at the speed with which we would like them to, as we have seen the delay that has taken place in modernising airports or even ports.

We don’t plan to build capacities, say for the next 20 or 30 years. We are either doing it for today or for yesterday. The Prime Minister has already declared that the infrastructure sector would require an investment of $300 billion, so I feel everyone has the concept or the knowhow regarding what needs to be done exactly.

I strongly feel that we need to have much more expertise in the implementation process. Our ideas need to be implemented at the ground level.

Taking place in Sydney from April 5-18, the show offers a rare wholesome experience of Australia.

Back in 1822, the Royal Agricultural Society was formed to contribute to Australia’s agriculture by arranging competitions and events and the first ever show occurred in 1823. And while in 1891, Queen Victoria granted her approval for using the prefix of Royal, today it indeed is a truly royal affair, the largest of its kind in Australia and undoubtedly one of the world’s best.

Government is imposing unwarranted and oppressive restrictions on entrepreneurs.

Three examples will indicate that India Inc. does have much to fear, particularly in terms of this government adopting a mai baap stance and imposing unwarranted and oppressive restrictions on entrepreneurs, companies and middle class Indians in the name of helping the aam aadmi. In no particular order of the intensity of their anti-business sentiments, the three retrograde steps are:

Most political pundits have concluded that the most important factor behind the electoral reverses faced by the Congress is rising inflation. So how does the government tackle inflation? The Reserve Bank of India (though nominally independent of the Union Government and the Finance Ministry) resorts to yet another baffling and inexplicable hike in interest rates. Even college students of Economics would know that these rate hikes would not do much to tame inflation because it is prices of food products and other primary articles that are causing inflation to rise. Raising interest rates to suck liquidity away from the system will not lead to an increase in supply of food products. These persistent rate hikes have come as a body blow to the Indian middle class, which now has to cough up that much more for loans to buy automobiles and houses. In fact, so steep is the increase in Equated Monthly Installments on home loans that most banks are now preparing to confront hundreds of thousands of defaults. It is the middle-class Indian that is getting hurt by this.
This is procurement season and a time when millions of Indian farmers get paid for their sweat and toil as their harvest is sold. In recent years, many private companies ranging from ITC to Reliance have joined the fray and now compete with the government-owned and controlled Food Corporation of India to buy food grains from farmers. Farmers have benefitted immensely from this. And, with a revolution in organised retail on the cards, everyone knows that corporate procurement will lead to farmers getting better prices not just for food grains, but also for fruits and vegetables. Yet, invisible mandarins in the corridors of power issue a diktat that virtually threatens private sector companies with punitive action if they procure food grains from farmers. This is strange behaviour for a government publicly committed to improving the lot of farmers. That’s because private companies are offering more than Rs.1,000 per quintal of wheat, while the FCI is offering just Rs.850. This is not only a blatantly anti-farmer move, it also sends a powerful message to the private sector that the mai baap sarkar can change the rules of the game anytime it whimsically wants to.
In 2005, the government tabled a bill in the Parliament that would allow the formation of Special Economic Zones across India. Hundreds of businessmen, entrepreneurs and investors flocked to invest in SEZs. So eager was the government to hand out cheap land to big business that it completely ignored the interests of land owners – mostly farmers. And once Nandigram happened, there was a virtual clampdown on the SEZ. The sensible step would have been to do what Business & Economy has been advocating for a while – let the market decide the land rates and let farmers own equity in the SEZs. Instead of this, the government has changed the rules to make bureaucratic interference more easy and pervasive.

Venezuela, like other Latin American countries, has witnessed an extremely unequal land ownership system, where only 5% of the population controlled roughly 75% of the agricultural private land. Importantly, almost 60% of the agricultural labourers have been landless. Migrating to urban centers, these landless labourers have flocked to slum areas, complicating things further. The oil boom of 1990s succeeded in earning petrodollars, the benefit for which again fl owed to select few of the elite. Neglect of agriculture and iniquitous land equation made Venezuela a net food importer. The land reforms seek to change exactly that.

For Chavéz to succeed, his land reform initiatives have to be merged with provisions of financial credits, technical expertise and marketing assistance for the farmers. But all in all, there is no doubting the fact that Hugo Chavéz has redefined socialism dramatically and humanely. If only Left ists across the world could learn from him...

For the great, the ordinary is... extraordinary! And why not? Look at Nike Inc. Who could have imagined a swashbuckling 12.7% growth in earnings per share (EPS) over a decade behind its modest M-Cap curtain of $26.45 billion?

Its financials of late, too, have been nothing short of fabulous with 9% growth in revenues – which touched $3.9 billion during the quarter ended February 28, 2007 – and an 18.5% rise in EPS to $1.37. And where competition is concerned, Nike – valued by the market at 17 times its forecasted 2008 earnings – is clearly way above its arch-rivals Adidas (valued at 12 times) and Puma (valued at 12.5 times). But while it deserves a congratulatory pat on the back for its performance, does it also mean that the world’s completely snug in Nike’s shoes?

Indian agriculture sector stands a perpetrator of global warming

Main agricultural sources in the biological generation of methane have been the flooded rice fields and anaerobic animal waste processing. Shockingly in India, the agricultural sector itself produces a whopping 80% of methane created in the country; of which 23% is especially from paddy cultivated regions. Almost 65% of Indian farmers have been solely dependent on rice in terms of employment as well as feeding themselves. The rice-centric obsession has ensured that rice gets cultivated even in those regions where it is environmentally not suitable.

It must be brought to notice here that the Indian Council of Agriculture Research, using complex spatially photographed data, had divided the country into 15 agro-climatic zones. The purpose here was to promote only those crops in particular environmentally sustainable regions. But almost nobody cared to follow the zone theory.

One example – much against the environment quotient, rice gets cultivated in the Ganganagar District of Rajasthan ably supported by the Indira Gandhi Canal. The effect – malaria, soil salinity and environmental destruction galore. Such examples are a dime a dozen; India needs to look within, or be doomed without.

Privatising land over dead bodies

Shameless slaves to the industrialists

One can at least understand the stubbornness of Ratan Tata when it comes to insisting on fertile land from Singur for his pet car project. After all, he is a Capitalist. Unfortunately, the Chief Minister of West Bengal Buddhadeb Bhattacharya cannot trot out any such excuse for not only handing over prime real estate to industrialists for a pittance, but also ensuring that his allegedly Marxist government is forcing peasants out of their homes and farms. Nor can he provide any excuse for the brutal manner in which the state police has been treating the local residents protesting the forcible ‘expropriation’ of their livelihoods.

Even more scandalous is the manner in which land is being forcibly taken away from villagers in Nandigram to enable the Indonesian Salim group to set up an SEZ. In fact, the SEZ is nothing but a real-estate scam to further enrich rich industrialists and paying a fraction of the prices they should command. The least that the neo-marxist Bhattacharya can do is to put an immediate end to this ‘crony capitalism’. Nandigram is facing a ‘civil war’ over the controversial issue.

Well, this seems to be one of the off -beat workouts being performed with amazing perfection and haste, across many trading terminals, as the dollar continues its free fall. Now, everybody is scampering for a hedge against the dollar and the question whether the dollar downfall trend will continue or reverse in future holds tremendous significance. Many vouch for the fact that the dollar will and should fall for the global imbalances to balance out. Well, perturbingly, reality begs to differ!

When our changing ‘expectations’ are vital...

On December 10, Edmund Phelps, my colleague at Columbia University, would have received the Nobel Prize in economics for 2006. The award was long overdue. While the Nobel Prize committee cited his contributions to macroeconomics, Phelps had made contributions in many more areas, including the theory of growth and technological change, optimal taxation, and social justice. Phelps’ key observation in macroeconomics was that the relationship between inflation and unemployment is affected by expectations, and since expectations change over time – so too, will the relationship between unemployment and inflation change. If a government attempts to push the unemployment rate too low, inflation will increase, and so, too, will inflationary expectations. This insight holds two possible policy implications. Some policy-makers have concluded from Phelps’ analysis that unemployment rate cannot be lowered permanently without ever-increasing levels of inflation.

The problem is that the official vote count isn’t credible. In much of the 13th District, the voting pattern looks normal. But in Sarasota County, which used touch-screen voting machines made by Election Systems & Soft ware, almost 18,000 voters – nearly 15% of those who cast ballots using the machines – supposedly failed to vote for either candidate. That compares with undervote rates of 2.2-5.3% in neighbouring counties.

Multinational soft ware service providers, such as Accenture and EDS, have a hard time sorting talent in a market where the level of people’s skills and the quality of educational institutions vary wildly. The socio-economic regime is not new, and it is not liberal, at least as the concept was understood by classical liberals. In the United States, faith of the general masses in institutions have also been declining steadily, and for very good reasons. A huge gulf has opened between public opinion and public policy, which are rarely reported, though the people cannot fail to be aware that their policy choices are being disregarded. It is instructive to compare the recent presidential elections in the richest country of the world and the poorest country in South America– Bolivia. During the 2004 US Presidential elections, voters had a choice between two men born to wealth and privilege, who attended the same elite university, joined the same secret society where privileged young men are trained to join the ruling class, and were able to run in the election because they were supported by pretty much the same conglomerations of private power. Their programs were similar, consistent with the needs of their primary constituency – wealth and privilege. Studies of public opinion revealed that on a host of major issues, both parties are well to the right of the general population, the Bush administration dramatically so.

What is common between Lalu Prasad Yadav, Ratan Tata and C. Y. Gopinath? The first one is a hard-core politician busy re-inventing himself as a transformational CEO. The second is busy changing the venerated Tata group into a multinational conglomerate. And the third is a first generation entrepreneur who has created a market that did not exist before. On the face of it, there is not much that is similar between the three. And yet, there is a common thread that links the three together. They are symbols of the relatively quiet and unheralded manner in which the transportation sector in India is undergoing a revolution. While analysts and the media have been singing hosannas to well hyped sectors like information technology (IT) and telecom, people like Yadav, Tata and Gopinath are ensuring that efficient, cost effective and fast transportation is quietly making India Inc. much more competitive than it was even a few years ago.

Road transport, air cargo, freight movement through railways have all undergone a dramatic makeover in the last few years. Exporters are happy now that shipments are not unduly delayed; companies are happy since products are taking much less time to reach destined markets. Says Rahul Ahuja, a Gurgaon based readymade garments exporter, “I had almost lost my credibility with customers in Europe and North America because of delayed shipments. That’s a thing of the past now.” Shashank Singh, owner of a fleet of ten trucks, echoes the same view: “I could never know earlier if my truck would reach Mumbai from Delhi in seven days or not. Now, I know for certain that it takes three days at the most.” The Indian Railways under Lalu Yadav too has made life easier for companies ferrying bulky goods. Perhaps the only bad news coming from the transport front is from the water transport segment, with Indian ports still a nightmare.

The primary reasons behind this quiet revolution in the transport sector in India are reform-oriented policies that have improved the quality of highways and roads, allowed air cargo to grow at a rapid rate and make Indian Railways a reliable transporter.

The positive impact on passenger traffic is far more visible than in the freight segment. Millions of Indians now fl y because of low cost airlines. More than one million cars will be manufactured this year in India. And Lalu Yadav’s innovative initiatives are making train travel a much better experience for Indians. Then again, new services like the Delhi Metro show a glimmer of hope that urban transport and commuting in India need not be a nightmare. Who knows, Indian transport might just deliver the goods for India Inc.

It makes a great eyeball-grabbing story for television, every time a senior politician is caught accepting bribes or shielding criminals. Minister of State for Home, Manikrao Gavit, was no exception when he was caught on audio-tape talking to a western UP gangster lodged in jail. A TV channel flashed the story for over two hours at a stretch, kicking off a row.

But, instead of defending himself and clinging to the chair, Gavit demanded a thorough probe into the incident. He also shunned all trappings of a ministerial office till cleared of the charge. Political leaders, cutting across party lines, rallied around this Minister. The Home Minister, Shivraj Patil, gave him a clean chit. As Deputy Leader of the opposition in Rajya Sabha, even Sushma Swaraj vouched for his innocence. Interestingly, a CBI investigation into the authenticity of the tape using audio spectrography found the Minister’s voice not matching with that in the tape. Two days later, CBI even arrested two persons, alleging that they were the persons in the taped conversation. Interestingly again, so far, nothing has been done against the TV channel that relayed the fake conversation without verifying its authenticity. But still, what has not been brought out in this controversy is the fact that Gavit, who is known for his clean image, has won a massive number of eight consecutive Lok Sabha polls. His insistence on the probe, as well as his giving up off all ministerial powers till he was cleared of charges, are traits that were seen many ages ago in Indian politics. If only Indian politicians could follow his example... someday...

LITTLE VENETIAN ANTIQUITY

First discovered by Christopher Columbus in 1498, Venezuela (meaning Little Venice) was named so by the Spanish explorers an year later (due to the way the Indians there built their houses over lakes). A prolonged Spanish rule followed, due to which Spanish influence on Venezuelan culture is deep rooted and strong. It was the first permanent settlement of Spanish rulers in South America. After many rebellions and revolutions the country regained independence on July 5, 1811, under Simón Bolívar. Since then, the country has faced major political upheavals. The army grew in power to control the nation in 1830. Juan Vicente Gómez was the last mascot of army rule. After his death in 1935, the country saw a democratic set up emerge, but it took time to enjoy real stability. It came only after Hugo Chavéz became President in 1998. He brought major changes in the constitution and governance. He has stood strong over the oil price issue in all OPEC meetings. But with many of his policies faltering, his seat of power is under threat.

B. Rogers, IBM VP, on August 12, 1981, unveiling the IBM Personal Computer (IBM 5150);“we believe its performance, reliability and ease of use makes it the most advanced, affordable personal computer in the marketplace.” At that time, though the fi rst PC in history – MITS Altair 8800 – had been released, and Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak were pushing their invention – Apple II, neither could make quite the impact.

Much like annual religious affairs or cultural carnivals, shopping festivals have now become a yearly tradition, celebrated with as much pomp and fervour. The Malaysia Mega Sale Carnival (MMSC) is one such nation-wide gala that was launched for the sixth time on the 22nd of July this year with promises of a lavish shopping spread to wallow in until September 3. At the spectacular launch, where were demonstrated motifs of Malaysian ‘urban’ and ‘street’ culture with exhibitions of break dance, graffiti art, skateboarding, hip-hop performances and a cappella recitals, the Minister for Tourism, Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor reinforced, “Our tourism calendar of events offer interesting year-round attractions to visitors. Such events include large-scale shopping carnival like the Malaysia Mega Sale Carnival, the National Water Festival and the Colours of Malaysia Festival... These events are just the prelude to what tourists can expect when they visit the country next year during Visit Malaysia Year 2007 when Malaysia celebrates its 50th independence anniversary.” As the venue, the Bukit Bintang area of Kuala Lumpur – one of the many shopping addresses of renown in the city – dazzled, there were all hints of great deals on an expansive array of goods up for takes.

THE EXPORTS DILEMMA

Though the quantitative ceilings on sugar exports were removed from the otherwise heavily guarded and controlled sector in the year 2001 by the government, it is regularly accused by players of not allowing the same in reality; as explained by S. L. Jain, Director General of Indian Sugar Manufacturers Association (ISMA), “The government has not done enough on its part; Krishi Bhavan still restricts exports to raw sugar importing companies.” That’s a pointed fl aw, especially when the government is preparing to allow the sugar industry to become a net exporter, with an export target of 1.5 million tonnes being set for SY-07.

The great Wall of Mart bows low!

The retail giant, Wal-Mart that was labeled as union-unfriendly by the All China Federation of Trade Unions (ACFTU) witnessed thirty of its employees (belonging to their branch in Quanzhou) set up their first union in China. Wal-Mart, which set foot on Chinese territory in 1996, currently runs 60 stores there and has always shown willingness to work in confirmation with Chinese laws. However, until some time back, the ACFTU had been pressing upon Wal-Mart to form a trade union. The behemoth has plans of employing a work force of around 150,000 people over the next five years.

More than 80% of qualified doctors leave these countries for greener pastures in Europe, North America, Australia and New Zealand. Already on the verge of collapse, the public health systems in these countries would truly go down under. Something urgent needs to be done by the international community to stave off this looming crisis that threatens poor nations.

It is rudimentary economics really. The power sector can be divided into three segments: generation, transmission and distribution. In the good old socialist era, SEBs used to handle all these functions. In the reforms era, they have been bifurcated and different agencies handle each segment. Yet, these ham-handed reform efforts have created more problems than solutions in each segment.

SEC should clear its own fault lines before blaming rating agencies

It seems as if the bosses at US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) have never heard the famous comment from British writer Douglas Noël Adams (of ‘Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy’ fame), which goes like this, “It is a mistake to think you can solve any major problem just with potatoes.” SEC is all set to bring in the ‘Credit Rating Agency Duopoly Relief Act’ (this was cleared by the US House of Representatives on July 12, 2006), to enhance credit rating quality by allowing competition and by curtailing the duopoly of Moody’s and Standard & Poor’s (S&P).

At present, out of the five Nationally Recognised Statistical Rating Organisations (NRSROs), Moody’s Investors Service and S&P control over 80% of the market share. And SEC wants to reduce the same by dismantling NRSROs to allow rating agencies with even three years of experience to register with SEC as ‘statistical ratings organisations’ (SROs).

In terms of compensation, even if there exist stark differences between a dead American soldier and a dead citizen of the countries where the American bombs have rained, this utterly selfish treatment meted out to American veterans points to the obvious rationale of the US administration. And that rationale rests in the scathes of rubble and the oil that flows through the streets of Iraq. Destroying & rebuilding both are most profitable businesses. The US administration knows it, and for it, a few thousand lives of collateral damage in terms of American or non-American blood, is nothing but cheap.

Parliament should pass the Bill for tribal land allocation (IIPM Publication)

Conservation activists argue that these tribal families will destroy whatever is left of Indian forests. Far from it, empirical evidence shows that property rights are the strongest incentive for protection and sustenance of assets. In fact, in every experiment where tribal groups have been given land and usage rights, the forest cover has gone up. Common sense dictates the tribal is best qualified to protect forests. It is their home, after all.
