That’s not the only feather in Khorakiwala’s cap – a Master’s in Pharmaceutical Science from Purdue University, USA and an alumni of Harvard Business School, USA. His company has made four more acquisitions in Europe–including Esparma (German), CP Pharmaceuticals (UK) and Pinewood Laboratories (Ireland). Besides, the healthcare major has also entered into co-marketing alliances with Bayer (Germany) and Eisai (Japan). Small wonder that the company is riding high with a 49% growth in sales and plans to launch 10 new products in Europe in 2007.

The launch of a new era

While India Inc. is busy going global, picking up industries in the developed world, the public sector has been quite a laggard in comparison. And India’s indigenous space programme has not been too far behind, as it has come under severe criticism. In this scenario, the recent success story emerging from Sriharikota (Satish Dhawan Space Centre, Tamil Nadu) could have profound implications. On April 23, 2006, Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) achieved a significant milestone by professionally launching its first ever commercial venture – Agile. The astronomical Italian satellite was immaculately placed in an orbit (roughly 550 kms above the surface of Earth) by an indigenously built Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle PSLV-C8 (since 1994, the vehicle has transported 8 remote sensing satellites; a meteorological satellite; a tiny radio satellite & a space capsule, it is also now in the process to launch India’s first mission to the moon, Chandrayaan-1, in 2008).
