ESPN’s new ‘cricketing’ takeover

ESPN has now bought over the 14- year-old cricket website cricinfo.com (part of the Wisden Group) – that is the bible of cricket in the online world. The amount of money that has been traded has not yet been made public. Globally, the website which has an audience of more than 7 million each month, also supplies content to mobile phones and news portals. What has worked like magic for the site is the combination of live ball-by-ball coverage of all Tests and One-Day-International matches, news and features written by some of the world’s best cricket writers, and in-depth statistics on the 3,000 international and 45,000 first class cricketers to have played the game. The merger of those two resources has made Cricinfo the world’s leading cricket website. According to Cricinfo’s press release, the site now joins a stable of top-drawer sports websites including ESPN.com, the USs premier online sports destination, and ESPNsoccernet.com – the world’s leading English-language football website. “Growing our business in the online world is vital for us to serve sports fans,” said Russell Wolff, Managing Director of ESPNInternational. “Cricinfo is a tremendous property with a great fan base and it will be a strong addition to ESPN.” Mark Getty, director of the Wisden Group, had this to say: “Cricinfo has developed into a significant cricket brand in its own right, combining huge global popularity with strong commercial success. ESPN is a major sports broadcaster and international rights holder and will provide the perfect environment for Cricinfo to further realise its enormous potential.” Timed beautifully, we’d say!

Honda gets the power of 100

An India specific 100cc motorcycle is being developed by Honda Motorcycle Scooters India (HMSI). The bike which would be priced slightly higher than the existing bikes in the segment would hit the roads in the next three years. HMSI is not mulling a second plant for the purpose as the new bikes would be produced from its existing Manesar facility. Earlier HMSI had announced Rs.4 billion investment for marketing, product development and capacity expansion (from its current 900,000 to 1,200,000 units per year). The company is also planning to launch a bike in the 125cc segment.

While everyone’s been talking at length about the great Indian retail boom

Excerpts from the interview:

The transportation and logistics sector in the country, despite being a high priority sector, suffers from infrastructural issues. What is your take on the future?

In the last few years, we have achieved a lot in terms of infrastructure, especially in roads and ports. The government is pretty pro-active in the way they are willing to unshackle. Yes, they are not doing it at the speed with which we would like them to, as we have seen the delay that has taken place in modernising airports or even ports.

We don’t plan to build capacities, say for the next 20 or 30 years. We are either doing it for today or for yesterday. The Prime Minister has already declared that the infrastructure sector would require an investment of $300 billion, so I feel everyone has the concept or the knowhow regarding what needs to be done exactly.

I strongly feel that we need to have much more expertise in the implementation process. Our ideas need to be implemented at the ground level.

Chavéz’s Land Reforms Are Truly More Than Forcible Land Distribution

Venezuela, like other Latin American countries, has witnessed an extremely unequal land ownership system, where only 5% of the population controlled roughly 75% of the agricultural private land. Importantly, almost 60% of the agricultural labourers have been landless. Migrating to urban centers, these landless labourers have flocked to slum areas, complicating things further. The oil boom of 1990s succeeded in earning petrodollars, the benefit for which again fl owed to select few of the elite. Neglect of agriculture and iniquitous land equation made Venezuela a net food importer. The land reforms seek to change exactly that.

For Chavéz to succeed, his land reform initiatives have to be merged with provisions of financial credits, technical expertise and marketing assistance for the farmers. But all in all, there is no doubting the fact that Hugo Chavéz has redefined socialism dramatically and humanely. If only Left ists across the world could learn from him...

Just did it!!!

For the great, the ordinary is... extraordinary! And why not? Look at Nike Inc. Who could have imagined a swashbuckling 12.7% growth in earnings per share (EPS) over a decade behind its modest M-Cap curtain of $26.45 billion?

Its financials of late, too, have been nothing short of fabulous with 9% growth in revenues – which touched $3.9 billion during the quarter ended February 28, 2007 – and an 18.5% rise in EPS to $1.37. And where competition is concerned, Nike – valued by the market at 17 times its forecasted 2008 earnings – is clearly way above its arch-rivals Adidas (valued at 12 times) and Puma (valued at 12.5 times). But while it deserves a congratulatory pat on the back for its performance, does it also mean that the world’s completely snug in Nike’s shoes?

Indian agriculture sector stands a perpetrator of global warming

Main agricultural sources in the biological generation of methane have been the flooded rice fields and anaerobic animal waste processing. Shockingly in India, the agricultural sector itself produces a whopping 80% of methane created in the country; of which 23% is especially from paddy cultivated regions. Almost 65% of Indian farmers have been solely dependent on rice in terms of employment as well as feeding themselves. The rice-centric obsession has ensured that rice gets cultivated even in those regions where it is environmentally not suitable.

It must be brought to notice here that the Indian Council of Agriculture Research, using complex spatially photographed data, had divided the country into 15 agro-climatic zones. The purpose here was to promote only those crops in particular environmentally sustainable regions. But almost nobody cared to follow the zone theory.

One example – much against the environment quotient, rice gets cultivated in the Ganganagar District of Rajasthan ably supported by the Indira Gandhi Canal. The effect – malaria, soil salinity and environmental destruction galore. Such examples are a dime a dozen; India needs to look within, or be doomed without.
